Chanute
Unique artwork promotes Google Earth default location

December, 2013

Wilson & Company has been working with the City of Chanute, Kansas since 2010. Though an on-call contract, the firm was selected by the City to reconstruct one of the main intersections within the City limits – the intersection of Main St. and Lincoln Ave. This intersection is located in the heart of downtown and provides the main entrance into town from the north and east directions.

Key elements of the project included improvements in the following areas: water, storm sewer, surface drainage, lighting, traffic control, and ADA sidewalk improvements. Another key feature of the project was the unique artwork that was used to highlight the project and the center of downtown Chanute.

In 2010, the City discovered that the Main St. and Lincoln Ave. Intersection is the default location of Google Earth. Having learned this, the City wanted to create a mural to highlight this unique attraction and promote the City. Wilson & Company designed the mural for the intersection and also found a paving company to recreate the design. Google approved the mural design and also provided some funding assistance for the material and installation of the brick pavers.

Since this was a multi-disciplined project and included different areas of expertise, several staff members in the Salina office were involved in making the project not only a success, but an award-winning project as well. Brian Spano recently accepted the following awards for this unique project:

  • ACEC of Kansas City 2013 Public Improvement Award (5,000-19,000 Population Category)
  • 2013 Kansas Ready Mixed Concrete Association
